Biography

Peter Pitout is a South African artist, born in 1977 in Durban and now based in the south of France.
After graduating in Industrial Art and Design in 1995, he moved to London, where he explored various artistic mediums before committing to oil painting as his primary form of expression. In 2003, he relocated to the south of France and earned a professional qualification in silkscreen printing.

His work addresses themes of human identity and form, alongside abstract landscapes and concepts inspired by physics. Growing up on the shores of Durban left an indelible mark on his creative vision—his paintings carry the colours, light, and intensity of African landscapes. For Pitout, creating art is a process of reconnecting with his inner roots while developing a distinctive visual language.

Over the years, his artistic journey from South Africa to the UK and France has shaped a unique style, leading to numerous exhibitions in France and art residencies in France, Germany, and Finland.

Artist Statement
My work often draws on both physics and metaphysics, exploring the relationships between philosophy, surreal ideas, and our modern digital age. I engage with subjects as varied as particle physics, meditation, and intimacy—reworking familiar imagery and symbolism into new, conceptually layered compositions.

While I explore different materials and processes, I always return to oil paint, enjoying the way this ancient medium can express contemporary concepts. My series are connected by recurring reflections on the present moment, with each project forming a cohesive body of work around a specific theme. The subject matter determines the choice of materials, format, and approach—allowing each piece to be both part of a whole and a complete statement on its own.
